Cute Critters Rocker Card – This Week’s Theme Challenge at 52 Christmas Card Throwdown

This week’s theme challenge at 52 Christmas Card Throwdown is all about critters, so I couldn’t resist making a fun rocker card featuring some adorable woodland animals!

Card Overview

  • Challenge Theme: Critters
  • Card Style: Rocker card
  • Main Colours: Soft blues, browns, red, green and white
  • Stamp Sets Used: Folk Christmas by Sizzix and Endless Wishes by Stampin’ Up
  • Techniques: Ink blending, alcohol marker colouring, embellishment with Crystal Effects and punched stars

Step 1: Creating the Rocker Base

I started by cutting a large circle from thick white cardstock to create the rocker base. Once folded in half, this gave me the perfect shape for my scene to sit on.

I die cut 3 more white circles, slight smaller than the rocker base. On one, to represent the sky, I used Speckled Egg Distress Oxide ink and a blending brush to softly blend the colour over the top half.

Then I used my trusty white Posca pen to add lots of tiny snowflake dots, giving a gentle falling snow effect.

Step 2: Stamping and Colouring the Critters

The adorable deer, rabbit and tree stump all came from the Folk Christmas stamp set by Sizzix. I stamped them in Versafine Clair Nocturne ink for a crisp black outline onto a die cut circle.

I coloured all the images using alcohol markers, keeping the tones soft and natural – several shades of light brown for the critters and some gentle brown shading on the tree stump, and then added Christmas colours of red and green to the baubles and clothes of the animals.

I then used the partial die cutting technique to partially cut the images, keeping them attached to the bottom of the circle, using my paper snips to snip off any additional card.

For a fun finishing touch, I added Crystal Effects to the baubles on the deer’s antlers, as well as the noses of the deer and the rabbit to give a glossy, dimensional finish.

Step 3: Adding the Sentiment and Embellishments

The sentiment, from the Endless Wishes stamp set by Stampin’ Up, was stamped in black ink directly onto the bottom of the critter circle.

To embellish the sky, I punched out 3 tiny stars from silver cardstock and to adhere around the critters – giving a hint of Christmas sparkle!

Step 4: Final Assembly

Once all the elements were ready, I adhered the critters and tree stump circle to the sky circle using foam tape, then adhered this to the rocker base using wet glue, making sure everything was well balanced so the card rocks gently without tipping too far.

Thanks for Visiting!

This was such a fun theme to play with – I don’t often make rocker cards, but I’ll definitely be making more now!

There’s still time to join this week’s Critter Challenge at 52 Christmas Card Throwdown – I’d love to see what you create!

Happy crafting! 🦌❄️🐇
