Paper piecing with Julie Nutting paper doll – Rita

Hello and welcome.

There’s another fun challenge at 52 Christmas Card Throwdown this week – paper piecing. This is such a great technique to make more of your stamps, adding pattern and texture to your project and gives a different look to colouring with inks or pencils. It’s also a fab way of using up your scraps of patterned paper or card.

For this technique to work well, a line stamp is best, with plenty of open area for the different patterned papers – Julie Nutting paper doll stamps lend themselves beautifully to this…

I inked up the Rita paper doll and stamped onto skin tone paper, also by Julie Nutting; this became the base that all the coloured paper pieces were adhered to. Next, I stamped the dress onto red floral paper from the Perfect Christmas paper pad, and the shoes, gloves and waistband onto a contrast paper in green. The hair was stamped onto a piece of brown Julie Nutting paper, then all pieces were fussy cut out.

Once all the pieces were assembled, I added shading with a combination of watercolour pencils and alcohol pens.  I found this 8″ x 8″ paper in my stash, and thought it made a good backdrop.  I added a scrap of green card along the bottom to ground the doll.

The sentiment, from Christmas to Remember by Stampin Up, was stamped in black stazon ink using a stampamajig. Finally, I adhered a sprinkling of gold half-back pearls.

I hope you’ve been inspired to join the challenge this week. Do pop over to the challenge blog, where the ladies have designed lots of examples of paper piecing to inspire you.

Enjoy your weekend

Paper piecing with Julie Nutting prima doll

Hello and welcome.

The wonderful challenge set for us this week at 52 Christmas Card Throwdown, is to use paper piecing.  I’ve tried this technique a few times in the past and loved the results, but looking at my stamp collection, I have very few stamp sets that lend themselves to this.  So, I took out my much loved and used Julie Nutting prima doll, Mindy, and had fun dressing her up for Christmas…

As this is a tall stamp, it suited being used on a DL size card base. This is usually a great opportunity to use up all your paper scraps, but this time I treated myself to a new (to me) Christmas paper pad by Prima instead, as it has lots of small patterns, ideal for paper piecing small images. It’s a little difficult to see in the photos, but you may just about be able to see Santa on her skirt…

I stamped the doll onto neutral typeface scrapbook paper by Stampin Up, and coloured her using Derwent watercolour pencils from the hair and skin tones pack, blended with a water brush.  Her hair was stamped onto Prima Julie Nutting neutrals paper, and shading added with watercolour pencils.

The pompoms on her shoes were fussy cut from one of the Prima Christmas papers, and the tag from one of the tag sheets in the set.  I added a layer of pink pirouette cardstock to the card base, and layered the snowflake paper on top, tearing the bottom edge to add a little interest.  I added various snowflake die cuts in shimmer white card by Stampin Up, and the Tim Holtz sprigs in silver card by Sizzix.

To finish, I added two washi tapes in silver and a sprinkling of rhinestones for sparkle.
