Hello, and welcome to my blog. It’s time for another 52 Christmas Card Throwdown challenge, and this week we have a rather unusual theme – 2027!
This one certainly got me thinking. Rather than making a traditional Christmas card, I decided to create something that looks ahead to the New Year, with the numbers 2027 taking centre stage. I kept the design clean and contemporary, using a combination of soft patterned paper, embossed snowflakes and lots of rose gold sparkle and shine.
Here’s how I made my Design Team card.
Materials Used
- Card: white, rose gold mirror, rose gold glitter by Dovecraft
- Designer Series Paper: From my stash
- Ink: chocolate chip brown
- Sentiment: by Papermania
- Embossing folder: 3D Flurry of Snowflakes by Spellbinders
- Dies: large numbers
- Punch: Confetti Stars Border
- Adhesive: foam, liquid glue
- Envelope: White
Step 1: Create the Background
I cut an A4 piece of plain white card to 8¼” × 8¼” square, scored at 4⅛” and folded in half. I then prepared two panels for the background.
The first was a strip of white cardstock, approximately 1¼” wide and slightly shorter than the height of the card. I embossed this using the Spellbinders Flurry of Snowflakes 3D Embossing Folder, adding lots of lovely texture and a subtle wintery feel.
For the second panel, I chose a piece of designer series paper from my stash, cutting it slightly wider than the embossed strip while keeping it the same height.
I adhered the DSP to the right-hand side of the card first, followed by the embossed snowflake panel alongside it.
The two panels create a simple but effective background, with the patterned paper adding colour and the embossed white card providing texture.
Step 2: Die Cut the Numbers
Now for the star of the show – 2027!
I die cut each of the four numbers from a mixture of rose gold glitter card and rose gold mirror card, alternating the two finishes. I love how the different surfaces catch the light. The glitter gives a lovely sparkly finish, while the mirror card adds a more polished metallic shine.
The numbers were then mounted onto foam adhesive and arranged in a loose diagonal line, running from the top of the card towards the bottom. Rather than lining them up in a straight row, the slightly relaxed arrangement gives the card a more playful and contemporary feel.
Step 3: Add the Sentiments
For the greeting, I stamped a sentiment in brown ink onto white cardstock. I then cut the stamped piece into two sections so that I could position the greetings separately:
“Merry Christmas” was adhered towards the top right-hand corner of the card using foam adhesive.
“And A Happy New Year” was positioned towards the bottom left-hand corner, again popped up with foam adhesive.
Splitting the sentiment in two helps balance the diagonal line of the numbers and fills the spaces around them without making the card feel overcrowded.
Step 4: Add Some Extra Sparkle
Of course, I couldn’t stop with the rose gold glitter!
I used my stars border punch to punch lots of tiny stars from scraps of both rose gold cardstock. These little stars were then scattered randomly across the card, adding extra sparkle and helping to tie the two rose gold finishes together.
I always think tiny punched shapes are a great way to use up scraps, and these little stars are particularly useful for Christmas and New Year cards.
Step 5: Don’t Forget the Envelope!
As a final little extra, I decided the envelope shouldn’t miss out on the fun!
I used the same Spellbinders Flurry of Snowflakes 3D Embossing Folder to emboss the flap of the white envelope.
It’s only a small detail, but I love making the envelope coordinate with the card. It gives the recipient a little hint of what’s inside before they’ve even opened it!
Final Thoughts
I really enjoyed making this card. The 2027 theme is certainly a little different from our usual festive challenges, but it provided a great opportunity to create something that bridges Christmas and the New Year.
The combination of white, rose gold, glitter and metallic shine gives the card a lovely celebratory feel, while the embossed snowflakes keep a subtle connection to Christmas. And I think we can all agree that the matching embossed envelope flap is a rather lovely finishing touch!
